Love aquatics and active recreation, and want to join a great team? 

We're running a free Pool Lifeguard Course at the end of September.

 

About the course and qualification

The free course covers two parts:

  • Pool Lifeguard Skills Award (PLSA)
  • Pool Lifeguard Practicing Certificate (PLPC)

This is a full qualification and holds 20 NCEA (Level 3) credits.

Once completed, you will have gained unit standards 30123, 30124, and 29848 (Level 3). Plus, you will get the opportunity to apply for a casual lifeguard position with us here in the lifeguard team at H₂O Xtream.

The qualification also requires a comprehensive first aid certificate (unit standards 6402, 6401, 6400). We are in the process of organising a first aid course at H₂O Xtream, however you may need to book and pay for your own first aid certificate.

 

Pre-requisites

You must be at least 16 years old and you will need to undergo a pre-requisite swim test. This can be done at H₂O Xtream between 8-21 September 2025. 

As part of the swim test, you'll need to pass the following:

  • 200m any stroke in under 6 minutes (goggles allowed)
  • 50m of either survival backstroke or sidestroke
  • dive for an object in the deepest part of the pool (1.8m)
  • tread water for 5 minutes

 

Course and assessment dates

All courses and assessments will take place at H₂O Xtream. To help you practice for assessment, you will have free use of H₂O Xtream during opening hours.

You must be available on the following dates:

 Thursday, 25 September 2025       9.00AM to 5.00PM       Lifeguard Training Course    
 Friday, 26 September 2025  9.00AM to 5.00PM  Lifeguard Training Course 
 Monday, 29 September 2025  time TBC  First Aid Course
 Friday, 3 October 2025  9.00AM to 5.00PM  assessment day

 

When you have successfully completed the PLSA, we will support you to gain the buddy-up hours required for the PLPC. This will be with a fully qualified lifeguard at H₂O Xtream. For this part, we will require drug and alcohol screening as well as a police check.

Joining our team

After you've completed your full PLPC, we will invite you to apply for a lifeguard position with us. We are currently looking to employ casual positions, with the opportunity for future part-time work as positions become available.
